Ancient Egypt Government The most powerful person in Egypt was the king and sometimes the queen. The king was known as the the Pharaoh. The Pharaoh was the leader, was also known as "Lord of Two Lands"because he ruled upper and lower Egypt,he owned all land,made the laws,collected taxes.The Pharaoh would lead the Egyptians into war,he was also the religious leader.The Pharaoh in our time would also be known as the "President". The Pharaoh was also "The High Priest of Every Temple". He represented Gods on Earth , performed rituals and even built temples! The primary leader was the Vizier also known in our time as Vice President.The Vizier is the Chief Overseer of the land. The most famous Vizier was the first one,Imhotep. He made the first pyramid and later was made into a god.Under the Vizier were people called Nomarks.They were sometimes appointed by the Pharaoh. Nomarks would be handed down father to son. Almost all of the Egyptians worked the fields along the River Nile.The Egyptians did not own the land or their house,they all belongs to the Pharaoh.The Egyptians accepted it for three - thousand years!The wall paintings show that Egypt was a peaceful place .People were peacefully farming,catching wild birds in traps,baking bread,shipwrights and carpenters build ships to sail and sell goods. When the Pharaoh died he usually passes it down to a son or a relative.If the new Pharaoh was a child,the court officials advised him.Sometimes if the prince was well trained and he was supposed to be good at skills/sports like hunting with a bow and arrow.He had to know how to ride/drive a war chariot and how to lead the army if they were ever in a war.
